i would like to start a thread where active (scientist/technologist) and (Techs) can post their salaries, and other information. This only applies to the United States and it's possessions.

This isn't meant to be intrusive, but since we are pretty much anonymous here - you need not worry. Payscale, etc are too broad, and probably many make it up. But, I believe this forum has many honest people =)

This is what I was told by the hospital I did my clinicals at:

Technician
$15 or $16/hour for day shift. The same pay I was making in insurance. Evening shift offers a $2.50 more an hour shift diff.
Experience doesn't matter. That's what they start at.

Fortunately, I've found a technician job that pays more to start: $19.50/hour. The manager said a Technologist at the hospital starts around $19 or $20/hour. She was saying that the pay isn't good in this field, period. She said that she wished she'd gone into nursing.

Florida is a extremely bad state when it comes to health care. They are downsizing retail pharmacy by creatig a central supply area, MTs even though they need a license are paid extremely low, it's a terrible state to wok in when it comes to making any sort of money in health care.

MLT(ASCP) MT(HEW) CLS(NCA) grandfathered without taking test with an Assoc Degree. Assoc cost 400 dollars and whew those loans. Starting pay was $4.50 per hour.

I am currently going to take the AAB-MT this month, not because it is required but just I want to add to my resume. Also just an FYI some of the hospitals in Oregon will consider an MLT an MT after 3 years of service.

Good for Oregon. If you do the same job you should receive the same pay and experience is a good route. If you hire them don't discriminate because it will be against the law in the future.

It wouldn't be against the law because standards don't allow one to do certain things as the other in some states.

Yea pharmacy techs an pharmacist do the same job, get paid differently, lpn and and rn's do the same job and get paid differently.

In new York, mlt were not allowed to work by themselves. In some hospitals mlt cannot work on blood bank or micro.

Question regarding your salary - I assume ~60K is your annual gross income. But is that the base pay, or does that include overtime, shift/weekend differentials, etc.?

Also - does anybody here know what the average going rate is for someone who has an MP (ASCP) certification? And just so I'm clear, that's a molecular pathologist specialization (ie., molecular diagnostics specialists), correct? Thank you.

Have any of you seen any changes in your paycheck since the ASCP/NCA merger? It's probably too early at this point, but are you hearing any news in your workplace how the merger is going to affect laboratorian salaries?

No, and again, No.

I doubt anything will be made of this important change in our title and no salary increase will result from it. Just another day at the office as far as they're concerned.

If I'm wrong, I'll call and personally apologize. But I know I won't be making any phone calls in the near future.

Northern CA does. Southern CA is a bit less. Northern CA starts CLSs at $36 an hr or around there. I believe it's probably the highest in the country. I'm not quite there yet and I have a little over 2 years of experience. But I've come to believe that's it's not all about the money, it's about liking your job and I can say that right now, I'm satisfied with my job.

If you are right out of college and work at one of the better hospitals in Chicago, you can be sure to start somewhere around 42-44k, suburb hospitals pay slightly less according to coworkers.

Salary: 12/hour (I love lowering MT wages bc the field has no standards!)
State: Texas (This state will hire any one with a pulse, no licensure here!)

California has the highest salary because they have standards and have not started hirin MLT yer, this is what happens when you have no standards an hire anyone with a plus, lower wages!!

Yes I love to lower wages, my MLT degree is the greatest degree out there. I wish there was a associate level pharmacist or PT so I can lower their wages too!!

Why do you blame MLT's for lower wages? It was your beloved ASCP that came up with the program in the first place. This was to solve a worker shortage and increase profits for Pathologists. By the way, it's not a good thing that a Tech run organization (NCA) has become a Pathologist run company.

Hahahaha....I love that comment about the mono and the lymph. We know just as much as they do and we paid less AND spent less time on our education. Yes, we may make less, but we have the same knowledge. Great comments, Larry!

Angel there at two SEPERATE tests for MLT and MT bc the level of knowledge is much more for the MT ASCP hence more years in school.

I know that there are two different tests for MT versus MLT; however, an ASCP certified MT will be doing the SAME work on the bench here that an MLT will be doing.

He's talking about MLT, or medical lab technician, which is basically on the level as a phlebotomist.

Yes, they do; plus I got a signing bonus. CLS48 is accurate in his/her info, Northern CA seems to pay the most. I looked at jobs in both the Bay Area and So CA and they all paid less, and it was really not worth it when the higher cost of living was factored in.
