travlinghart in bacolod, Philippines said: oh so MS in biology not in medical technology.. yes co'z i was a bit puzzled thinking that you have a masters in med. tech. yet work as a technician in a clinical lab.

It can be a bit confusing. In many countries, a Lab Technician works under the supervision of the Lab Technologist. Yet in some regions, they refer to MTs as Lab Technician. Medical Technologists are also referred to as Clinical Lab Scientists or Biomedical Scientists.

Hi, I immigrated to Canada almost 2 years ago. I possess a Bachelor degree of biology as well as a medical college diploma of laboratory diagnostics. I have 10 years experience include positions of laboratory assistant and doctor at lab, however, in Toronto I am considered a medical laboratory technologist. I mostly worked in immunohaematology department.
Now I just have to be certified with OSMT (as a lab technician) or CMLTO( lab technologist).
If anyone who has a similar background and confronts the same obstacles can advise me where can I go to upgrade myself and have 20 successful phlebotomy procedures, 10 successful ECG procedures, and 80 hours of practical experience in a medical testing facility.I personally refuse to go to private colleges such us Everest and so on and know that labs don't take volunteers( open to suggestions )
Maybe someone aware of courses for 3 or 6 months which include above procedures and following certifications. Please answer, I would really appreciate, cause I don't even know where to start. Calling to OSMT and CMLTO doesn't give me anything cause they just refer me to their web site and it doesn't provide me with the answers to my questions.

Thanks to everyone who will take time to reply.

Thanks Sajjad, really appreciate your help.

I entered the one year course of medical laboratory technician program in Centennial college HP Science and Technology and now I am at the end of 2 semester. My 3 semester will involve a clinical placement in a hospital for 6 weeks. After graduating I will be able to write OSMT exam as well as CSMLS exam. And after that I will look for a job.
In the future I will consider go to the Mitchener for lab technologist though some hospitals can reimburse you if you complete a course successfully.

I wish luck to those who are at the beginning of the path. However, as a person who had 7 years of studying from back home I realized that learning is continuous process of giving and taking knowledge in order to master yourself and help others which will last all your life. Be prepared and equipped for that and don't forget a positive attitude which will be of great use in a long run.

With best wishes
Suri

Hi Suri,
I just graduated from Algonquin Creers Academy Medical Laborotary Assistant/Technicia diploma program. My background amost same with you. If you take a medical laboratory assisant/technician program approved by OSMT,this program covers everything that OSMT requires for OSMT exam, you will be qualified for OSMT exam.Otherwise,it is difficult everone.Twice OSMT exam one year in June and November.

good luck

Hi Mr. Suri

I did a 1 year course in Medial lab tech from india some 10 years ago. i passed it successfully but did not work more than three months in a lab, so to say, i do not remember how to conduct the simplest of tests now.
i came to canada a month ago and have found out that med lab technicians are highly in demand. what do u suggest. is there any scope to upgrade the diploma that i have already done , or should i go for a med lab assistant course first, since it is short and will help me in beginning my career in a short span of time like 6 months.

pls advise. thanx in advance.

Hi Harry,

If you could read the information above you got the idea what to do.
If you want to be a medical lab technician I would suggest Centennial College, it is only one year program with a clinical placement and hands on experience, after which you are eligible to write OSMT exam( I don't know what is the regulation in your province, you need to find out)

I don't know if you have Centennial college in Alberta, but try to find a community college with a medical technician program, cause private colleges are all about ripping off.

I wish you good luck and feel free to ask anytime

Hey Harry firstly I want to let you know I am a woman)))) so no MR. Suri.

On top of the diploma you have in medical laboratory science you have to possess 80 hours of laboratory experience in Canada including 20 phlebotomy procedures and 10 ECGs. You may find this information if you follow this link

www.osmt.org/content/index.php?pid=7&cid=53

So you need first to evaluate your diploma and get Canadian experience, only then you may apply, if not you should finish one of the approved by OSMT colleges and pass the OSMT exam. You also may find related information on OSMT site. Don't be shy, just call them up and ask about whatever concerns you have.

Best of luck.
Sorry Harry fro replying very late

Hi,

If you want to continue studying then this link will help.

www.osmt.org/content/index.php?pid=7&cid=56

Go to the medical laboratory technologist program at the bottom of the page

After graduating from one of these program you will be able to write CSMLS exam for technologists and if you pass you will be certified member of CMLTO.

If you want to work as technician you need to pass either OSMT and CSMLS exams for technicians and find a job in Toronto.

I am also currently looking for a job and in the meantime preparing for those technician exams.

Good luck

Sorry to hear your story, but I knew someone from India with the same problem and she needed the hours to do the upgrade also.Unfortunately she had to go back to school that's were we both met. We finish the program in 8 mths and 1 mth on practical placement and we are both going to do the OSMT exam in november. We went to everest but if you don't want to go there you can find another school and go but you are not going to find anywhere in Ontario to do what you want in such a short time.
All the best in finding your way.

Thanks Tash for your comments, really appreciate. I graduated from Centennial college this year and going to write Csmls and Osmt exams in 2 weeks.
I also wish you best of luck and also suggest not to stop at this point cause you also can get educated as a medical lab technologist which is exactly what I am planning to do in couple of years.
