I have a question about what experience is needed to get a job as a MT. All the jobs seem to want 1-3 years of experience. I will work in a clinical setting in my last year of college. Does this count? Also, is working at a research lab while in college suggested? Would it help a lot? What kinds of things are looked for during an interview for an MT position? Thank you for any help.

Depends on what you are doing that last year..
Research probably doesn't count...

You would do better to find a reference type lab to work in and stay away from hospitals...

If you have ur MT ASCP you will be hired reguardless if you have experience or not. If you do not have your MT or ASCP you are very limited, depending how desperate hospitals are will depend on if you get hired

All the jobs say BS MT ASCP preferred. If you have that you will find a job anywhere. If you do not have your MT degree you might be out of luck. And if you do not have a ASCP cert most places will not hire you.
The ASCP is the gold standard for new students and department directors < the ones that hire you >, they know you have to be pretty knowledgeable if you have passed that exam.

BS MT/CLS ASCP = work everywhere

no MT/CLS degree = no job in a hospital

other cert (amt, aab) = very limited in being hired.

Thanks for all the replies. I am actually still a student (2nd year) and was wondering what I should do now to be a more competitive job candidate. What kinds of things do employers look for? What questions do they ask at interviews? Thanks again.

I'm planning to apply to the Presbetorian hospital in manhattan, NY. They start their pay for MT's at 37 an hour. Obviously, they will never pay that much to anyone who does not have a MT(BS)ASCP certification.

Presbetorian hospital in manhattan? Maybe NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital? Spelling and capitalization of nouns were not required in your studies?

Perhaps you haven't heard. The US has been in serious trouble regarding job shortages for 2 years. This is not a time to consider immigration into the US.

ALL jobs that require accreditation and certification in the US actually require US diplomas (to my knowledge).

I've never heard of a medical organization accepting non-US credentials unless you are a Doctor of specific countries with specific very high credentials.

Surely they need you in India. There are so very many regions/areas in India were people are ignored in poverty.

I've always wondered why a Health Industry "care-giver" type person would completely ignore the conditions of people in their own country. Too good to help your own country men/women if they are not in your own family group or city area?
Be a giver to people OUTSIDE of your own family and connected group and city in INDIA before you come here, please.

Go to the other side of India from your home.... help them.
