Does anyone work in the microbiology department? I'm about to graduate and look for a job, and this department most interested me. However, I am scared of potentially being infected with some serious illness while working in the department. Do you think this happens much? Also, why do you like working in microbiology?

Hi Michelle,
I rotate thru 4 labs and work in Mirco and do AFB's. Everything we work with is potentially infectious in any part of the lab you work in. I have never heard of anyone contracting anything while working in Micro or in any other lab for that matter.

I do mostly AFB's and I love it, it's fun. I also work in Blood Bank which is a drag cause everyone is so stressed out all the time. I like Blood Gas and Coag ,it's super easy , we also got brand new machines so it's better.

About 6 people quite Micro in the last 2 months and out supervisor is retiring at the end of the month so we really need MT's to apply at our hospital.

There are so many jobs here in Atlanta that you can probablypick and choose at the hospitals and reserch labs here.

Micro is the best field to work in as far as medical technology is concerned in my view.
A few people have been infected in some of the advanced labs where research in diseases like hemorragic fevers and tularemia are being investigated.
But that shouldn't happen in a routine hospital/clinical lab where you won't see those types of diseases unless you are unlucky. If you folllow universal precautions always you should be safe.
