Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field? What skills should you learn to increase your salary? |

It will usually depend on experience and/or what accounts you can bring to the table. |

I have a list of companies that pay between 60/40 and 75/25. The higher end being the brokers commission. I have heard about some brokers making between 20 and 40k per year and I have also heard of brokers making over 100k per year. These are independent brokers that do not rev share with any firm. They just contract themselves to a major trucking company and earn a percentage of every load they cover with a carrier. |

It will definately depend on what accounts you have and how much freight you move annually. BigMack is correct on the commissions, but there are brokers out there making much more than 100k. |

I hire and recruit freight broker/agents and currently out of 11 broker agents we have 2 making 20-30 thousand each month 7 doing 4-8 thousand a month and 2 doing 500-2 thousand the difference between them is - DRIVE - ABILITY TO TALK TO SHIPPERS - CONTACTS IN THE INDUSTRY - TAKING ONLY GOOD FREIGHT - too many brokers should change their name to jokers because the spend most of their time covering bad loads ex- low margin, too many pics or drops, high claim customers, and so forth. Find a niche in the industry become an expert in a feild of generalist and you will have a deep customer book not dependant on any one customer. 50k + if a decent broker 100k+ if a great broker |

Once you have lucritive accounts you can pretty much make the final decision of how much commission percentage you will recieve, however, you have to ask for a fair amount of the money, keeping in mind that there is someone who is backing you finacially and the expense's of doing so is costly. I personally approached the firm I now work for with my figures and documents to back them and asked for a higher percentage than they offered me. I got what I asked for and wouldn't have settled for less. I knew that my request was a fair one and if this firm didn't agree, the next one would! |

I recently became a Transportation Broker, and I am looking to hire some established agents. What would be the best way to go about this? |

Bill Loza in Rancho Santa Fe, California said: I recently became a Transportation Broker, and I am looking to hire some established agents. What would be the best way to go about this? Hire someone like me. all i do is find and recruit brokers for our company. Research other agent programs and make sure you can offer what they offer as a bare minium and if you can add anything at all it will help. |

Bill Loza in Rancho Santa Fe, California said: How would I go about finding someone? LOL it just funny because to me that answer is easy, the same way you go about finding agents. But no seriously in your case try local website that have job boards, you can post to some for free and they also have resume searching on some for free, if those dont work try a paid site (monster). Staffing agency may be a good answer also for one person, as you dont want to spend for ever looking for some one you want them to spend the time looking for people for you. there are also some other way but I am going to be greedy and keep the non-obvious ways to myself if you want to call me I have one referral for you that may work or I can share another source or two with you. |

Host said: Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field? It is all commission based unless you are an earner. I pay one of my top guys who runs my room the following $30K base , 10% override on the room he manages and 65% of his own paper. You will have some agents out there making 175,000 - 300,000 yearly. Most will make 45K on average. |

tersa in Houston, Texas said: Looking for a chance at becoming a freight broker times are really tough. Don't have any money to spend on classes can someone help! Most brokerages wont hire out of one of the broker training classes anyway so dont spend the money. Secondly if times are that tuff you wont make it as a broker or agent because starting out from scratch will take 60-120 days to start getting any money flowing thru. We pay our brokers on the loads they move right away and ones that transit a million dollar book of business still dont see there first pay for usually 3-4 weeks. So your best shot is to get a J.O.B in a truck co or brokerage for a year or so get some money in the bank then from there you will have a high chance of success. Hope that helps. |

My husband works and we to rely on that but no one will hire you without any experience. I'm looking to get trained and willing to work hard. |

jacob_w-logisticdynamics in Buffalo, New York 27 months ago |
there is always some looking for a dispatcher or check caller very entry level if you get a job doing that it pays little usually but if you prove you are detailed orientated and will learn they will move you up to a operations person then ops manager then full broker then from there you can run your broker or agency and make more money then you can count. THAT IS JUST MY ADVICE. |
|
tersa in Houston, Texas 27 months ago |
I really appreciate your advice. Does anyone know a broker willing to train? |

Thank you for your response how ever uniformed it was. You're an idiot. I feel sorry for anyone who makes the mistake of working with you or being trained by you. I would advise anyone on this forum to be careful about listening to Jacob trying to put others in a bad light and making false accusations. People who are only concerned about their own personal agenda have no place in this business or communicating on this forum. Grow up or go away. |

As a recruiter do u suggest I take the 1 day seminar or 5 day course and would u hire a newbie like myself? I can tell you that the 1 or 5 day seminars are typically not viewed as exp or training by most brokerages (ours being one of them). If you look on a lot of postings looking for freight broker agents they will say right on them that the training is not accepted as exp (network FOB being one that sticks out in my mind). where those course come in handy is if someone is going to open their own brokerage (get their bond, auth., incorp'ed, have the capital to pay carriers, T.M.S...) and they are going to do the good old American start and build it and overcome every obstacle then they can get a good base knowledge from one of those courses. You are still better off to work for a brokerage before opening one but it can be done. People like to think that a brokerage can bring on agents and it doesnt cost them anything so why not give anyone a shot. Well in some cases that may be true if that brokerage doesnt offer much or any support. In our case we tried out bring on newbies and it was very expensive. the cost of initial setup and training on the software, all the added agent support hours and staff, opportunity cost of not getting as many established guys, turn over... so most (not all) established brokerages will either only work with established people or charge a fee to kind of lock you in a bit. So short answer to your question is no we no longer bring on newbies, sorry if that was a long road to an answer. |

I am looking for a possible part-time position as an agent. I have a Bachelor's of Science and a Master's Degree in Information Technology Management. I have several years of management experience in the Navy. My brother is a truck driver and suggested that I try this as an additional means to generate revenue. I am not looking to give up my current employment but, I do have a home office with the latest computing equipment and fax machine. I have excellent customer service skill and think that I would be a good fit to this type of employment. I would like to eventually purchase a rig, hire a driver and make money that route but I think the agent/broker path would be a little less risky at this point. If anyone can provide me with additional information or off any constructive advice, I would greatly appreciate it. I may be reached at [Edited by Host] Contact info deleted Please do not post Contact info in the forums.

Nik in Atlanta, Georgia said: Hey could you send me the link to the companies that pay a larger percentage to agents/brokers.... i think that i'm getting screwed at 30/70. the 30% going to the broker. Thanks Nik Nik we offer 60/40, but before you jump ship to us or anyone in that matter take a good look at everything they have to offer, and what you are looking for. If you are strictly a sales person (you get the freight someone else finds the trucks) then 30/70 is a good split. Now if you are looking to be your own broker and get and move the freight yourself or hire some employees to help then you want to look at split, ability to add people, minimums (if any), financial tools (quick pays, fuel advances, do they escrow your pay, do you have to wait for the shipper to pay before you get your split...) and what kind of tools and support do they have that makes your job quicker and easier... if you are interested in hearing what we have to offer email me or visit our website both or in my profile. |
