Fuel costs are eating the profit in the 3 -4 car haulers, if you are willing to go a bit farther than FL only, or could invest in a 6 -7 car hauler your chances would be alot better. I would recomend having a winch for sure though.... Would be happy to chat with you, check out my profile.

I started a car hauling business 6 months ago and use a 3/4 car hauler. We financially are about to go out of business because of truck problems. Over the last 6 months we have a the top end of our engine replaced, our transmission has been replaced twice and now our turbo has blown. The wear and tear it puts on a truck is alot or we just got a bad truck. Does anyone have any advice for us on keeping the business going? Has anybody else been through the same thing?

If u have a powerstroke 6.0 get rid of it; pure junk. If it is a automatic, same thing.

Personally, I would have to consider credit availability and negotiating ability along with cash on hand but I would purchase a GMC 5500 Series with a Allison 6 speed Automatic IF I could justify the cost based on my accounts or brokered loads. Also, Dodge makes all new 3500 series factory equipped with a exhaust brake(jake brake)which is an excellent feature for safety and reduction of break wear. If u r going to buy a new truck consider that many 450 or 4500 series trucks(depends on make)can b equipped with a full air ride system just as on a big truck. It all depends on your willingness to pay for what u want. A 50 or 70 series Freightliner is worth investigating but u might have to upgrade your license if it has air brakes or u haul over 26,000 lbs. I do know that the Powerstroke 7.3 6 speed manual(my truck) is a good design and capable of 500,000 to 1,000,000 miles if properly maintained and conditioned with fuel and oil additives. It is also the reason they stopped building them! The 6.0 has been trouble from the start and Most ppeople who owned them the first 2 years got rid of them at a significant loss. Consider also you can buy a xtra long pkg. called "cab & chassis" which is 10 inches longer than a standard 1 ton and have a sleeper put on 4 the same money as a regular bedded truk. Let me know how it goes. Fixing 2 do same gig myself.

Peter,
IM no xpert, but u cannot haul 6/7 cars with a 1 ton dually. Illegal & impossible, period. U would have to have a full blown diesel tractor to haul that many units. U might do more research b4 u get in over your head. Best of luck.

You need to get an older model dually because a friend of mine has 2008 f350 and he had the nsame problem, but another friend has and older model and has never had major problems. Find a good older model.

Hello, interesting comments from people who seem to have the answers, and qeustions. I too am looking at getting into small freight moving business. In Whitehorse, Yukon, thedistance to Vancouver is about 1500 miles. Realy hard to get freight carried down - big delays. Coming up is not bad - but they always are looking to back haul our (local freight) heading south - I see a potential. Looking at a 1 ton dually Dodge with Cummins but also considering a GMC Kodiac. Comments on these and looking at an enclosed trailer. would these trucks pull 16,000 lbs. Last question, what is a lb of product shipping for, $1.00 per lb ish?

Thanks in advance for any help

kolkin,
if u r interested n making as much $$ as possible w/o any more breakdown time than possible then purchase as big a truk as u can afford. A kodiak or equivalent would b the most heavyduty truk that would do the job. A 1 ton will do the job but u will spend more on maintenance with a smaller truk and if u purchase a truk with a sleeper u will ultimately b able 2 use ur logbook more effectively which is part of truking regardless of what u r hauling. Also, the DOT will leave u alone which will b a benefit 2 u ultimately. go for a truk with about 100k miles on it for best fuel mileage. New truks get terrible fuel mileage. Hope this was helpful 4 u. Good luck.

Pam, I am seeking information on starting a car hauling business. I have researched buying a one ton dually (I woulf like a Duramax), with between 40-70K and a four car trailer, at a cost of about 40-50K. The obvious problem is drumming up and keeping steady business. The area I live is not big, but I am close to Savannah, Ga and Macon, Ga. Atlanta, Ga is the largest city for business and is about a 250 mile trip for me.

I am looking into this because I enjoy driving, and working with such equipment. I have a state government job, so I am used to not making a lot of money, I am simply tired of the headaches that come along with that line of work!! I am looking to build a successful business more than putting a lot of money in my pocket. I am also willing to purchase other trailers in order to haul other items such as bulk items, etc...

What is your insight into seeking out and retaining hauling contacts and contracts?

I new to the transportation business. I started working as a dispatcher for a small company. I was a mortgage broker but, closed down and got out of the business. I'm looking to start my own brokerage hauling automobiles. I familiar with the prices that are pass on to the drivers but, I need to know what does the brokers charge per mile (on average). I'm trying to determine how to price the loads.

Alex... F 350 with a 7.3 is very good truck. They get the worst fuel mileage of all but r very reliable. If u can find 1 that is not worn out and is a manual shift u will have gotten a good start. Stay away from the 6.0 Powerstrokes as they r junk. Good luck.

I have a GMC 3500 LWB chassis cab dually turbo diesel. It had a dump body that was removed. I want to set it up to pull a 3/4 car hauler. It has no bed, can I just weld a gooseneck hitch to the bare frame or do I have to get a platform that covers the rear wheels?

- Was this comment helpful? Yes / No (1) Reply - Report abuse

Mitch,
Each state may have differing laws regarding the covering of the rear drives but if u have a gooseneck installed absolutely make sure it is installed by a competent individual who knows what they r doing. I have seen many units on the road without a bed so i am sure u can legally get by with no bed. The DOT may pick on u though 4 looking "ragged" to them if u know what I mean. Good luck!
