I'm sorry about cypress I hear that its hard to get in, I heard riverside. Likes people who took their pre reqs there and ya, the rest just keep us waiting. Maybe well b classmates or maybe not cuz I only have a 3.45 for pre req coarses and from reading this forum it seems low. |

CoriD in San Diego, California 18 months ago |
thanks for the comfort. cypress is too far to drive anyway. at least thats what i tell myself so i don't feel too bad. so SWC told you 2 years? someone else on this forum said they were quoted 5 years but they got in in 2. how long did it take you to hear back. i'm so over it. my classes will expire soon. i'm thinking of getting my bachelors in the mean time or going into nursing. |

Hey there. I read that you are waiting for Chabot. I received my letter 2 weeks ago. I'm an ALTERNATE... #19. I highly doubt I will get in but whateva!! Have you heard back yet??? |
|
Jennifer in Placentia, California 18 months ago |
I just applied to Chabot a couple weeks ago. They didn't have on their website a deadline to apply so I thought it might be open apps like SWC. How long ago did you guys apply? |

I turned in my application in January. Did any of you apply to DVC in pleasant hill/ concord? |

For all the aspirants who applied at PCC, I just talked to their health science program director and said that after determination of who qualifies, those included in that pool will be randomly selected to get into the program. I really felt bad last friday because i got an "alternate" letter which was extremely disappointing. I was really expecting to get in, confident that the selection criteria is highly academic. I had an GPA of 4.0 on science prereqs and 3.8 on non-science, so i thought i was really set to get in. Little did I know that PCC is a lottery school. Although I still feel bad I didn't get in, I feel better knowing that luck had something to do with it and not a failure on my part. So to those who didn't get accepted at PCC, don't feel bad as the results were not within our control. PCC was really my preference as it would have been convenient, commute wise. It's just disappointing to learn that they're a lottery school and being selected into the program has little to do with academics. Well, better luck next time and just have to wait for other schools... |

I'm sorry you didn't get in, but with your grades I'm sure you will get in everywhere else you applied because for the most part CA schools are heavily GPA based. I feel a little put off by your disdain for lottery schools. It seems like you feel that those of us who don't have top grades don't deserve a spot as much as those with amazing GPAs do. Just because we didn't get straight A's doesn't mean we're not working as hard to accomplish the same goals or that we don't have other skills or qualifications of the non-academic realm that will make us great hygienists one day. Sometimes those of us with lower GPAs need lottery schools in order to accomplish our dreams as well. I don't mean to cause conflict, I just wanted to point out that you may be discouraging or hurting those who rely on lottery systems to give them an extra bit of help. I really wish you the best of luck and keep us updated on what schools you get into. |

Hi jennifer, my message was in no way intended to to discourage, hurt, belittle or undermine the efforts of our coaspirants. After reviewing my original post, I realized I may have lacked sensitivity on considering all perspectives. I admit, I was saturated with frustration at the time I posted my message. I agree with you that getting high grades isn't a guarantee of excellence, not only in our career of choice but in general as well. Application of knowledge, constant development of skills and optimizing patient care is more important. In reality though, acceptance in most schools are based on academic records. It's usually the obvious basis of competence and worthiness to belong. The same reason I put much effort in achieving an esthetically pleasing application form. From all these assumptions and expectations, failure to achieve the goal causes excruciating disappointment. An outcome I would have to say was brought upon by nobody else but myself. Good luck to us all! Let us keep our focus and determination to be where we want to be. Please keep the channels open so we can help each other. |

rnick, It's cool. If I don't get into hygiene I'm going to grad school so the year doesn't get wasted. Everything will work out eventually :) Isn't it crazy that I can get into a graduate program, but can't seem to get into hygiene? What schools did you apply to? Have you thought about going the BSDH route with your amazing grades? |
|
lisa in Granite Bay, California 17 months ago |
hey jennifer im sorry to hear abt Cerritos. I still havent heard anything from them. |
|
rnick in sunland, California 17 months ago |
hi jennifer, well, most of the time it's funny how things work. it seems like there is always a humorous irony in everything. well, i just deal with whatever is thrown my way. right now, all my hopes are resting on WLAC. i got unfortunate with PCC. BSDH? nah... not only it would take longer, it costs much more too... let me know what happens and i'll srely update you with mine. best of luck... |

Hi there! I'm from Canada so I don't really know much about your school system or which college I should attend...could anyone give me advice? I really wasn't planning to move to Anaheim...but my family is moving there in the summer and I've decided to go with them. I've been accepted to Cerritos College(dental hygiene program), Fullerton College(Nutrition and Food Science), and Los Angeles City College (Biology-Transfer). I'd also like to know how the job prospects for dental hygiene are in the Orange County area. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it! (: |

Don't give up guys! Most people don't get in on the first try because there are so many people applying for such a small number of spots. I knew someone who gave up after 3 years even though she had straight A's and she wishes she has just kept on trying. You don't want to live your life with a such a big regret do you? Why don't you work towards your Bachelors in the meantime. I did, and now it looks like I'm going to be working on my Masters too until I get in one day. Extra schooling is not in vain, when you finally do get in hygiene you will have so many more options with a higher degree should you ever get sick of clinical or get injured. Just a thought, but keep your chin up your time will come. |

Hello, If you guys were to pick between WLAC and Cypress, which one would you go to? They are both good schools but I was wondering if one has an advantage over the other. |

ya! I got straight A's in all the science classes . Thanx jennifer for being so positive . Getting my bs sounds good but due to lack of money I should probably keep working and not rack up more school bills or just apply to a private dh school and just pay more money. Thanx again for the advice. I guess they can't accept everybody due to the limited no. Of seats. So to everyone just starting ur pre reqs get straight aA's ur first time around and get expirience early |

Tell her to try again! :-) She applied to both types of schools and never got in. She won't go back and try to do it because she is so discouraged and her science classes expired anyways. She's an RDA teacher now, so she is still somewhat in the field. In fact all of the RDA teachers I work with tried for hygiene and never got in. It's very discouraging especially when they tell me I will never get in either with my grades, but do I really want to give up my dream because they're bitter? Hell no. |

I am curious as to what it takes to get in though, did you have an RDA and lots of work experience, volunteer exp., etc or are really good grades(basically 3.9-4.0) enough to cut into WLAC? well, there is really no clear cut magic formula. when you get to attend dh 87, they basically discuss the criteria and we, as applicants, can only try to cover as much base as possible. from what i've heard, it's highly competitive to get in and high grades alone, wouldn't earn an automatic spot. a grade of 3.9-4.0 would definitely increase your chances. not a lot of people are aware but i think future applicants such as yourself should put emphasis on essay writing. i think it makes a lot of difference. try to practice your writing skills, get very high grades and get dental experience so you can keep your hopes high. hope it helps... |
