What are the average starting salaries, bonuses, benefits and travel requirements like at Home Depot?

What do you like best about working at Home Depot? Are there any great perks or special treats for employees?

I have 8 years in growing plants and applied for a garden shop position and have also never heard. Three weeks after I first saw the position advertised, I see where they are advertising again.

I would suggest calling the Home Depot office you applied to and ask for a confirmation that they have received your application.

I have the same experience. I have applied several times, and have not received any response. Yet, the job is then reposted a short time later. I am amply qualified for the position that I applied for. I don't understand their screening procedures.

I do agree with you, I am also more than qualified, Home Depot nevers replys and continues to post the jobs.

I think Home Depot needs to consider another way of seeking employees because presently I would advise no one to aplly to a Home Depot Job because they will not get back

Home Depot's Human Resource department has fostered itself to be comprised of poorly skilled, self serving individuals. They drive a culture that is survival of the fittest, so the focus is only on saving one's behind. There is no consideration of others. That's why they don't even invest a few pennies to provide a generic acknowledgement of appreciation for interest. It is not a good place to work.

I would have to say it is what you make of it. If you are willing to work and YOU choose to have a good attitude then you will love working for the Home depot. If are not willing to work then you will hate the job. It really is your choice. I believe this is a great company and a great place to have a career. Be the voice of positive and of good change.

To those of you who wonder why you cannot get a reply, if you have ever filled out the questionaire in the in-store kiosk and answered the questions honestly, ( for instance, ones concerning having ever become angry at work--who hasnt) you are probably screwed forever. So whatever you do lie like crazy and paint yourself as the perfect angel of a worker.

the reason they never reply is because you asked all the right questions...like a lot of other "big box" retailers, they are not looking for kitchen designers who want to make money...they are looking for kitchen designers who want to make money for home depot...i.e. green, untrained,18 year old high school grads or 65+ year old retirees who are looking for "spending money"...if they actually, along with lowes, wanted to control the kitchen business in the u.s.a. all they would have to do is hire trained professionals and pay them what they are worth

I have also applied several times online to Home Depot. I also called the store that I applied to and was told they are not hiring even though they have jobs posted online for that store. I know that I am not STUPID, I know that I seen the positions posted but they aren't hiring? It seems that all companies do anymore these days is that they posted "fake jobs" to lure in candidates to apply but don't have any intention of hiring them. I interviewed at Lowes for an HR manager job and would have made more as a clerk full time at Quik Trip. Crappy pay and working 60 hours per week as a salaried employee is not what candidates are looking for, especially when you have a college education or beyond.

Amen to Ray's response!!! I had six years with the depot as a flooring specialist and was making $21.00 an hour. Under Arthur and Bernie it was a family run atmosphere where they understood the principle of taking care of the employee first. Happy employee's make for Happy customers which in return makes for a Happy Bottom Line. When Mr. XXXX took over, out went the family attitude and in came the corporate mind set of do more with less and that is when I watched with my own eye's all of the really knowledgeable talent go back to the trade. I could say more, but lets just say if you are looking to make a decent amount of money based on your trade and years of dedication, the Depot will not recognize it. The always have poor excuses as to why they can only give you $ 0.35 cents a year raise if you are lucky. Don't believe me? Feel free to ask any seasoned employee at any Home Depot. Turn over rate is crazy! Though if you go there and want to succeed, you MUST have a good ol boy mind set and believe every thing they tell you as gospel, then you may make it to a ASM and work 55 to 60 hours a week on salary with out any more stock options or incentives. Since XXX came they have done nothing more than take things away from employee's and gave XXX 240 million. Go figure. The first thing out of peoples mouths when I would go to their homes to sell flooring was "What happened to Home Depot". With this in mind, and not that I am a teller of future events, I gave them another 8 - 12 years from 2000. Builders Squre and Builders Emporium which were corporate from the get go only lasted about that amount of time.

Don't waste your time with Home Depot. I too have applied for several upper level (Corporate) positions for which I met or exceeded every stated requirement. No replies, nothing. I remember when HD was "contractor only" 30 plus years ago. It was a great place until (name removed) was hired. Go figure how a cola company exec goes to run a DIY chain. Under (name removed), HD has lost market share, the stock is down, and I never see happy employees anymore. Don't waste your time as I did with application...they only hire for senior positions from within. The postings are bogus - a way to get benchmarks in salaries, etc. Heard that from a former HD senior HR type in Dallas regional.

First, (name removed)is not, never was, a COLA company exec. He came from GE's Power Systems division. Now, I'll grant you that running an industrial/manufacturing business might not be a great fit for a DIY chain, but (name removed) brings years of experience in process management and moving production to digital environment. If you'd be in a THD store 10 years ago, you'd know why this was something that (names removed) wanted in the person who took over - the stores had awful inventory management problems.

By the way ... lots of positions being filled in the HQ - or as we call it, the Store Support Center. I think you might be getting no calls simply because of relocation costs. Few people seem to be coming from other parts of the country, simply because there is a great supply of corporate personnel in metro Atlanta. Layoffs from Coke, GE, BellSouth, and other companies make this a competitive hiring market - the company doesn't really need to pay relo.

I applied to Home Depot with very little experiance in the work force but with knowlege about the dept. I applied for. I accepted to take the job for barely over mim wage just to get my foot in the door. Sad to see that they do hire inexperinaced cheap labor because I feel now that I'm over quailified for my dept and not getting paid for my knowlge.
Its bad when you know more about your products than the dept. head and customers ask for you by name and will come back later when your availible if your at lunch or have a day off.Of course I know I was hired because I was willing to be hired for chump change but seeing that I add asset to the company they could show appreciation by compensation. But from what I hear is that I shouldnt expect more than a .10 or .15 cent raise even though sales sales have exceeded.
Oh yeah and the X-mas bonus was just a tad bit self centered.
Sad but Home Depot will most likely be just a stepping stone in my career.
I would love working for Home Depot if it werent for the low wages.

I mean, most require an 'exam' to assess risk and control factors of the new employee. "thinkers NOT wanted' should be evry ap!! What is going on in corporate america. Seem the only way to get head is to start your own business. There still few good company out there treat there employee good but that few and far in between.

It's all going to come crashing down on them when the truth comes out. Greed is going to kill american business.

Look how good tayota is doing and is number one in cars and that just one example and they treat there people good.

I feel said for american workers. It's not that hard to treat your good workers good. Don't need a PHD. Treat employee's good and will come back ten fold.

O well what a mess we have corperate america.

Good Luck folks

I will confirm that Home Depot never responds to applications for employment, either for white collar positions or blue collar ones. I am a highly experienced paralegal, and have responded to their ads for legal support staff here in Florida, never to hear from them again. I also did the computer application for a store position, after having been told while shopping there one day that they needed and were hiring people, again never to hear back from Home Depot. I tried repeatedly to reach the store's personnel person, "Marcia", who never bothered to respond to me in any way (and also apparently was never actually in the store, either,) and even the store's manager just shrugged when I asked him why I had not gotten a response to doing the computer application.

Home Depot is a strange bird.

I find the comments interesting. I had applied for a district management position and was interviewed several times by three different corporate execs. I recieved a phone call late one Friday saying they were ready to make me an offer I just needed one more phone interview. The following Monday I recieved a voicemail that HD had decided to "take a different route". After reading several of the comments, I am thankful I am not with HD. I agree and am saddened that corporate America is run by greed which they call "cometition". I pray we wise up for our future generation!

I have a background in cabinet design + design school. I worked a a new store as a kitchen designer. I was given no training on the computer design program, or how to even order cabinets. I was told I would learn this on the job. How? from whom? I was teamed with a young "designer" from another store, who had been forklift operator only months earlier. The only help available was by calling other stores. These stores kitchen designer were so busy they would not even pick up the phone. I am an excellent designer but HD failed to provide me with the tools I needed.

The apron states "I help in all departments". This meant I helped in plumbing, floor and wall, appliances etc. in addition to Kitchens. To top it off...we were constantly being watched. I was given the "dusty finger" test at least twice a week. The "kid" never once dusted or cleaned. In addition to all I had to cover on the store floor I had to clean and dust too.

The kid quit, leaving me by myself. I lasted 6 months. Almost 2 years later that department is staffed by a young gal who had been in appliances and a guy from floor and wall. These people are "designers" without one single class in design, experience or training. Don't even consider having HD (Lowe's is the same) design a kitchen.

Most the managers of stores im my area that had been with HD from when Arthur and Bernie ran the co. are no longer with HD. These are people that had "orange blood" in their veins. The store do look neater and cleaner but the corp. treatment of employees leaves much to be desired. Funny thing, although I believe HD treats emplopyees like dirt I would go back to them. I need health ins. and a steady job which I don't have as an independant designer for the cabinet co I went back to work for after leaving HD. I could also be able to relocate and still work for HD.

Based on what I've read here about HD replying to job applications I seriously doubt I have anything to fear. I doubt anyone at HD corp. reads these forums, even though they should.

I worked for HD and for HD Supply in an HR leadership capacity. It was a great opportunity but the culture is truely survival of the fittest. You work hard but the harder you work the harder you have to work. If you have a family it's a challange to balance because that means nothing. The compensation is competitive but I will share with you what several Head Hunters have shared with me when I was recruited by another fortune 500 company. They said, there are certain companies that are feeders and others that are receivers. HD is s feeder, "Churn em and burn em". Positions tend to be posted and reposted not because of growth but because of that culture. You will get great exposure to a wealth of information from an HR point of view but what are you willing to sacrifice? That is the real choice.

I enjoy shopping at home depot and I am considering working at my local store. I was told by an employee to fill out the online application and then call the HR department 2 days later if you actually want a job. I have 15yrs of home building experience and was looking for more of a corporate stepping stone career with stability and future options.
I was hoping to find out more hard numbers as far as wages and salaries.
I would make sure you do the 2 day follow-up call.

Here are some tips for employment at store level.
Go into your local store and find out when the busy months are.(They will not employ anyone during the slow months) Ask for the name of the HR Manager. Apply for a position before or during the busy months and follow up with mailing a written resume to the HR Manager. Keep it neat, simple but positive and include a picture if you like. Timing is everything as they get a huge number of online requests and your written resume will be the only thing to make you stand out.
Do not expect to walk into the store and get an interview with the HR Manager. Home Depot is still a good place to work and the do prefer to promote from within. Good Luck

The average starting pay for hourly positions is barely above minimum wage. Now the management positions pay more but it is salary and when you consider how many hours you are working(55 to 60 a week)it would probably be less per hour then the hourly jobs because you are not getting paid time and a half for overtime.

As far as what I liked best about working at Home Depot. The only thing I can think of is clocking out and going home. A better question would be, what do you hate the most working at Home Depot. That list could go on forever.

I worked for Home Depot in Idaho for about 4 months. I was classified as a Part-Time employee and I qualified for part-time benefits (50%). My normal hours were varied, always on Saturday though. I averaged about 40 hours per week for the 4 months. I asked about the benefits and wondered why I passed my probationary period, worked 40 hours per week and I was still classified as a part-time employee. I was told by an assistant manager "that's just the way it works at HD".

My starting wage was $8.50 per hour and my ending wage was the same. I did not get any other "perks" or discounts. Once a year, around Christmas, we were given 5 - 10% off coupons to use ourselves (1) and pass the rest on to family and friends.

Unless you enjoy dissatisfied customers, rude comments, long hours, low pay and 50% benefits for 100% work performed, I would pass on the HD. The only way I got a job was because I knew a friend who knew someone else in the HR department.

The most outrageous thing about HD is that they had a record year last year and the outgoing CEO got over $210 Million dollars in cash and stock options! Way to go HD! Screw the little people who work hard to make HD what it is today. Although I don't like their hiring practices, I still shop and prefer the HD over other home improvement warehouses.

If you have ever applied for a job before you would know that you usually have to call them after you apply. Secondly Home Depot is a retailer like wal-mart is and Home Depot is the best paying retailer in the world. Look it up. Do you expect to get paid 40,000 a year at a retail store if your not in management.

Well, I guess I was one of the "fortunate few" who heard back from them. I was asking $65K at the time and they called me. I went through a lengthy telephone pre-screen interview and in the course of thing found out that Home Depot has all of their HR processes documented. In other words, they don't need anyone with any real HR skills - anyone who can read can work the job, pretty much. Not a job for me. I built up my skills and experience to USE them. Another bad aspect is the hours - they're not M-F, 9 to 5. The days and hours will vary.

The fact that they constantly advertise says a lot about them - they obviously go through folks a lot, and one has to wonder why. Obviously, if you're looking for a stable postion, this won't be it.
